“The Pilgrims are zealots, you used the correct word. We don’t like to discuss that because the Pilgrims give us warm and fuzzies, but the truth is they’re basically religious zealots. They idea we have is that the Pilgrims came here for religious freedom, not really so much, no. I mean they wanted to worship according to their own beliefs, that part is true, but they also came here to isolate themselves too. They wanted isolation from all other religious inputs”
 
Happy Thanksgiving!  Tour Guide Tell All is taking you back to the First Thanksgiving and discussing all things related to your favorite food-based holiday. We get into the reason for the season by discussing the Pilgrims, and why that is not a name that they would have recognized or even liked, the Mayflower and its difficult trans-Atlantic journey, and the Native Americans they encountered when they arrived.

Rebel Rose, the Confederate Spy

“My supposition is that Rose O’Neal Greenhow had sex appeal. I think she had the kind of thing you can’t capture in a photo, particularly at the time. There is obviously something beguiling in her manner because she is so good at this. She has numerous friendships that people just give her information, there’s got to be something about her that helps with that, I feel like.”


Tour Guide Tell All ends our scandalous and dark October with a rollicking spy yarn. We go back to the Civil War to discuss one of the most infamous spies of the era, Rose O’Neal Greenhow. Greenhow was a well placed and dedicated Confederate spy with great connections in the Union government and she played a pivotal role in one of the earliest episodes of the Civil War.
Come along as we wrap up our October with a wily and resourceful woman and her scandalous exploits.

“Now as I always say to my friends and family when they visit London, and to my tour guests, if you are standing in a park, a garden, a square, or a market, look around; because the only reason it’s there is because it’s a plague pit”

 

“If you are thinking about bloodletting, the first place that people’s minds often go to is to leeches. But if you thought about that, maybe in a past life, you were very wealthy. Because in order to afford leeches, in London, in the 17th century,  you would have had to get them from a very posh leech importer, and if so, you would have displayed them in a beautiful container. You may even have a plated silver or gold leech container that you kept in your pocket, and you might bring that leech container out, when you want to show off… You might fondle that leech container when you are talking to someone you fancy.”

“Out of the town car pour 5 individuals, 2 men and 3 women. One of the women, in evening dress, immediately takes off running toward the tidal basin and jumps into the water. They fish her out, she tries it again, they finally handcuff her to prevent her from trying it a third time. It’s kind of a motley crew, you’ve got 3 women in evening dress, all 5 of them look a little worse for the wear. And then someone recognizes one of the gentlemen.”

 

Tour Guide Tell All continues its scandalous and dark October with a truly Capitol scandal. Days before an election, police in DC pull over a swerving town car late at night. Out tumbles an 18-term Congressman and a stripper nicknamed “The Argentine Firecracker.” Neither of their careers would ever be the same.

The Grave Robbing of Mt Zion Cemetery

One local of Georgetown, a descendent of of some people buried here described what the cemetery was once like: "one could see bodies sticking out of the side of Mount Zion. Soil erosion was such a problem that corpses were often exposed and unearthed from the grounds."
 
Disturbed graves were not a new thing for Mt Zion - and the disturbance was not always caused by natural forces. Canden talks about this historic cemetery in our continuation of Spooky October stories.
