Memorial Day Special: The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Apologies to all our incredible listeners! Tours are up and running and we had some technical issues to work out, so we are a bit behind on releasing episodes. However, we wanted to drop this particular episode on this special day as our nation comes together to honor and remember the incredible sacrifices made by our Armed Forces throughout history. We could think of no better way to mark the occasion than to teach you everything you've ever wanted to know about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, one of our country's most important and meaningful places.

 

We will be moving to a lighter "summer schedule" as with tours picking up (hopefully) we will have less time to work on this. But we will still be bringing you two episodes a month, and then at least one bonus episode a month for our Patrons, along with some other bonus material.

This year, 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and we wanted to talk about this anniversary, the Tomb itself, and its history. It is also Memorial Day, and this is how we would like to help honor all our military personnel, TGTA style!

World War I and the New National World War I Memorial

"(WWI) is a war that is under-studied in the United States. Somebody said this to me once, that we feel about World War II in the United States, the way that Europeans feel about World War I....World War I is the big trial, and World War II is kind of this thing that happened afterward. And to wit, we have a friend, Matilda...and she moved to a teeny tiny town in the middle of nowhere France for a little while and there's about 100 people that live there, and on Armistice Day...they all get together,  and day drink, because France; and they read out the names of all the of the people from their village that died in the war."

 

We are dedicating a new memorial in DC, the National World War One Memorial, this week! We at Tour Guide Tell All are never ones to let a good opportunity go to waste, so the Rebeccas are here to chat about the memorial, and give an overview of American participation in the war.
