Black History at Arlington National Cemetery

"And his experience is not unique.  There were men who fought in World War I, Black soldiers who would be beaten up for wearing their uniforms, who would be attacked for talking about their service….and it’s exceptionally tough for these World War I veterans of color who come back."

 

Our Black History Month series kicks off with an exploration of service and sacrifice in uniform. Tour Guide Tell All comes back to the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery to explore some of the notable figures of Black history laid to rest on the grounds and the often-untold stories of those that called the land home.  Learn about Maria Syphax, Uncle Jim, a freedman's village, "Black Death," a highly decorated father-son duo, and more.

History of Presidential Inaugurations (Part I)

“What I would like to see is the moving out of the White House. So the way that this happens, at exactly noon when the legal transfer of power takes place there is a small army of staff that basically fans out across the White House, they literally wrap up all the stuff from the old presidents house and cabinet. All the personal items are going to go to whatever address they are moving next, all their official documents get sent to their archive and at the same time they unpack all the stuff from the new president.”

“(Evalyn Walsh McLean) is so famous that she took this big trip to Russia, and Cole Porter wrote about her. And this is when I turn my chair around backwards and I lean over to show teenagers how hip I am. 'Cole Porter was like a rapper in that he would drop references to the hottest chicks, the most important people, and all the tabloid drama!' And so the fact that she gets referenced in this Cole Porter song is definitely a testament to the fact that she was like a Kardashian, that level of notoriety and fame. And the line is: 'When Mrs. Ned McLean (God bless her) / can get Russian Reds to "yes" her / then I suppose / Anything goes....'"

“The Petticoat Affair is an amazing name. To me, it reads like a bodice-ripper title - this would be some sultry book you would take to the beach or it sounds like an old period movie.  I love this story because  it combines several things that you and I love which is women's history, there are some really interesting women who play in this story; presidential history, we're going to mention a lot of names that have come up in previous episodes; and it's sort of this great little scandal."
